First of all, Is there any reason to be a leader?
An answer is not really easy, but it is not difficult either. In fact, the world today is much more interconnected than several decades ago, and tendecies show that the world is going to be even more interconnected in the following 20 years.
What are the implications? Big ones, if you think about team work, collaborative work and collaborative initiatives are going to be daily activities, and surely not only restricted to your work but to your life as well. So big are the implications that leaders will be required to help the teams achieve their visions.
Chances are you’re going to be in more than one team at once, and with several asignments on each of the teams.

Through the years we have been delighted to see exceptional leaders to raise over their peers and move countries towards great achievements, to stand out over the worst circumstances.
Amazing leaders have 2 qualities in common, according to Warren Bennis in his work “Learning to Lead”:
- A leader knows that leaders are made and not born.
- A leader keeps growing and learning every single day.
In Bennis’ work, you can find a couple of steps to be a leader:
- Get the people you want to lead, to “buy” your vision (or shared objectives).
- Generate and Sustain Trust.
Please read the steps once more and try to check if any of the big names previously mentioned pass the test. I’m sure you’ll find that all of them totally pass the test. Let’s check the couple of steps of this formula and review how can we turn ourselves into leaders.
Selling Your Vision
As the first step is as basic as breathing in and out for living to happen. If you fail selling your vision, you are not doing leadership. Leading is helping others find the way towards that known vision. You have is to present that destination as a [desirable] place for all of your followers. The vision has to resonate in the group’s heads and hearts.
Generating Trust
- Be competent, show you know what you’re doing.
- Be congruent, do what you say and say what you do. Don’t let your actions speak something different from your words.
- Be supportive, stay on the side of your team.
- Be empathic, take care of your people.
As easy as it seems the recipe to turn yourself into a good leadership expert is not. Leadership has to do with your skills to lead, and that ability is one you have to develop.
