As one of the leading manufacturers of hand crafted wooden baskets, Peterboro Basket Company has established a reputation of high quality among basket enthusiasts. The company is located in Peterborough, New Hampshire and has been in business for over one hundred and fifty years.

One of the founders of this company was Amzi Childs who came originally from Deerfield, Massachusetts. He arrived in Peterborough in 1841 to manufacture lead pipe. Meanwhile, a man by the name of Moses Chapman had erected a building in 1830 that served as a wheelwright shop. Along with a man named Asa Henry, Childs began to weave baskets in the wheelwright shop from 1851 until 1891. In that year, the basket business burned, and was later sold to the McLane Basket Factory that was located in Milford. The Peterborough business was moved there as well.

One of the foremen at Child’s factory was named Henry B. Needham. He had worked at the plant for fifteen years when the fateful fire occurred. After the business was moved to Milford, Needham established his own basket business, the Needham Basket Factory, in Peterborough in part of the White Machine Shop. Two years later, in 1893, Needham built a new building of his own.

His business began to boom, and in 1916 his business was incorporated and became the H.B. Needham Basket Company. In 1920, this company was reorganized to build a new building and was reunited with the Milford company. In 1926, tragedy struck for a second time as the new building of the H. B. Needham Basket Company also burned. The company was reorganized again, and became the present day Peterboro Basket Company.

Today, the business is still family owned and operated, and employs a large number of Peterborough’s Cambodian population. The company also has the Peterboro Factory Outlet Store that is housed at the same site that the manufacturing facility is. Inside, a team of artisans craft these homemade baskets with the same care that Amzi Childs did. Unlike other basket companies such as the Longaberger Basket Company, the Peterboro Basket Company does not offer tours of their facility due to insurance requirements. The company does, however, offer a video that shows the process in which these baskets are made.

Anyone who is interested in baskets has probably heard of the Longaberger Company, a leader in the manufacture of handcrafted baskets. Started by J. W. Longaberger and carried on by his granddaughters Tami and Rachel, the company makes maple wood baskets that are a must-have item for any basket collection.

J. W. Longaberger started his career as an apprentice basket maker in 1919 at the Dresden Basket Company that was located in Dresden, Ohio. During the Depression of the 1930s, the factory closed, but J. W. continued his craft from home. He and his wife Bonnie Jean eventually saved enough money to buy the old building, and Longaberger baskets came into existence.

The company itself was started by Dave Longaberger, J. W.’s son, who ran it until his death. It was Dave’s idea to make the corporate headquarters something that people would remember. When driving down State Route 16 in Newark, Ohio, people are amazed to see a huge building that is shaped like a Longaberger Medium Market Basket. Dave had planned to have all the company buildings built in this style, but died before any of the others were started. His daughters, Tami and Rachel, decided against the unconventional architecture.

Longaberger baskets have long been sold by representatives at home, much like Avon and Tupperware. While sales were high in the 1980s and 1990s, they have recently declined. Plans are underway to begin selling these baskets online.

As well as basket making, the Longaberger Company has become a popular tourist spot. When traveling in the area, you can visit the Longaberger Homestead and Basket making Campus, which is located in Frazeysburg, Ohio. You can take a tour of the company itself as well as shopping at the Longaberger Factory Store. There is also a workshop that will allow you to make your own basket. Throughout the summer months, there are two celebrations that the company sponsors. One is the American Summer Celebration that is held in early June. The 4th of July celebrations are impressive as well.

The company also owns the Longaberger Golf Club, which is one of the top golf courses in the country. Due to its location in the hills of southeastern Ohio, this course can prove to be challenging to the most avid golf enthusiast.

You can also tour the headquarters of Longaberger, “The Great Basket” itself. The building is seven stories high and the offices are designed around an atrium that is 30,000 square feet. The Basket handles have replica copper and wooden rivets and are heated to prevent ice from forming on them during the Ohio winters. The Basket even has two Longaberger tags on the side of it, each measuring 25’long and 7’ tall. Weighing 725 lbs. a piece, these tags are 3’ thick and can stand up to the ravages of time.

While many people are familiar with Native American and African hand weaved baskets, Japanese baskets are not so well known. These beautiful handcrafted baskets that are constructed of bamboo have long been Japanese tradition.

The art of Japanese basket weaving dates back to the Jomon period, which dated from 10,000 B.C.E (Before the Christian Era) to 300 B.C.E. These early baskets were used as tools and were very basic in design. Later, during the Yayoi period that extended from 300 B.C.E. to A.D. 300, baskets began to have intricate designs that showed that the people had begun to appreciate basket weaving as an art form. From the nineteenth century on, Japanese artisans have used traditional Japanese weaving methods combined with certain western techniques to weave baskets that can truly be called their own.

The Japanese have two names for baskets-hanakago which means “flower basket” and hanaire which means “flower container.” These people utilize these bamboo containers in the traditional tea ceremony as well as the art of flower arranging, which is an integral part of the Japanese culture.

As mentioned earlier, Japanese baskets are woven mainly from bamboo, a species of grass that is hollow on the inside but also unbelievably strong. In Japan, this grass serves a variety of purposes. It is used as a building material and can also be eaten. It also has a mystical quality about it. Japanese tradition states that the bamboo tree will only flower once in its lifetime and that this occurrence only happens once every hundred years.

In reality, the climate found in Japan as well as in Southeast Asia is ideal for this type of grass. It is also one of the fastest growing plants in the world, one plant recorded as growing 47.6 inches in one day. It can also reach an astounding thirty to sixty feet in height. The Japanese tradition holds true with some of species of these plants, with one plant living over one hundred and twenty years and being recorded as flowering only once during that period.

Due to its vast availability, the Japanese have used this plant for everything from musical instruments to utensils. Many Japanese basket weavers prefer to use bamboo taken from another item, such as old rafters and roofs. Because of the smoke from the fires and stoves in these old buildings, the bamboo that is reused is a deep burgundy color, eliminating the necessity of dyeing that is associated with the use of fresh bamboo.

The art of basket weaving is often passed down through family members, although a master basket weaver may also accept novices into his household. These students spend years studying under the master before they even touch a strand of bamboo. When they are finally allowed to weave, they are usually taught to imitate the Chinese style basket first. After the novices become comfortable with their technique, the master will allow them to begin to work with the Japanese design. Today, there are many modern basket weavers that teach their craft in a more contemporary manner, even though these artists will admit that the traditional manner is much more educational and rewarding.

Japanese weavers today do not need to face the challenges that their Native American counterparts do as far as seeking the materials that they need. Bamboo is still readily available which should ensure the survival of traditional Japanese basket weaving for many years to come.

The term macro photography is a situation whereby you get up close and personal with your subject. True macro photography is working on approximately 1:1 ratios or closer. This produces an image that is true to the size or much larger than the subject being photographed. It is easy to get confused with this type of photography in terms of what is considered really macro. Normally macro photography ranges from life size 1:1 up to ten times enlargement 10:1, which is believed to be the exact definition of macro photography.

To take great macro photography, you will need to invest in the appropriate equipment. To just buy a lens and focus on close hoping for a good shot is not the way to do it. You will need to have a good camera, like a Canon or Nikon, and a good macro lens with a good zoom factor. A good camera to use is a Canon 1DS Mark III with a 110mm macro lens

Choosing a subject can be quite tricky. It can sometimes be difficult to get a good depth of field with macro photography, especially if you are shooting a part of an object in an abstract sense.

For example: if you are shooting part of a candlestick that is ornate, it’s important to get the lighting right as well as having the vision to begin with. Often this can work out quite well whereby DOF is lacking allowing for high magnification and originality.

However, when shooting insects and such alike, magnification is important. Therefore, DOF is also reduced but makes up an integral part of the image.

Without being too technical, to increase your DOF you will need to set your camera on a higher F number-the F-stop. The highest is F8.0. When increased, the aperture of the lens becomes smaller prohibiting the amount of light that reaches the light sensor. To compensate for lighting, you must either use a flash; extend your shutter times or other sources of light. For still subjects, extended shutter times normally suffice, however, if your subject is on the move you will need to use a flash to prevent the image from blurring.

Using a tripod can also help, especially if you are waiting for you’re subject to appear or you are shooting still. This will prevent movement, which can be detrimental when working in macro photography. You will also need a release on your tripod. This will also allow you to move your camera around while securely attached.

Macro photography can be a real art form if executed properly. Subjects/objects are explored that are normally difficult to see with the naked eye and your vision for what makes a good image is heightened. There is an abundance of subjects and objects to choose from, whether it’s in your home or garden.

Firstly, you will need to think about what would make the subject/object interesting. Consider the texture, colour and shapes as well as a particular feature that would make a great shot. There are many ways to take a good macro image, and experimenting with angles that encompasses varied lighting can produce outstanding images. You can also build your own mini macro-studio in a simple box that is open at the top and at the front. You can drape it in any colour you like, for example; using black would marry well with objects of colour.

For your lighting you can simply clamp to reading lamps on the side, but make sure you use GE Reveal bulbs, these are not as harsh as normal light bulbs.
